At some point over the past couple of years, the beauty industry decided that the only way to effectively apply your skincare is with a jade roller. (Fingers are for peasants, guys.) The trend was shepherded in by celebrities like Victoria Beckham and Alicia Keys, confirmed by the skincare set on Instagram, and has officially hit the mainstream. And, while it may just sound like an extra, unnecessary (but extremely aesthetically appealing) tool to store in your vanity, experts agree that jade rollers can improve your skin and turbocharge your current routine. Cecilia Wong, a leading New York based celebrity facialist with clients such as Zac Posen and Katie Holmes, answered all of our questions about jade rolling. Keep scrolling!
A jade roller is a tool that features a rolling stone made of Jade to use on the face, neck and décolleté area. Or, as Cecilia explains it: “A jade roller is a tool that features a rolling stone that’s made out of Jade.” Some jade rollers also have a smaller stone on the other side that you can use on the eye and nose area. As a stone, Jade is believed to have healing and protective properties.
Cecilia notes that the jade roller is also not a new invention, and has actually been around for thousands of years. In fact, it was first used by Chinese royalty as a form of an at home facial to minimize fine lines and wrinkles, alleviate puffiness and promote better blood circulation for the face.
“Your face is the only area that doesn't get a workout,” Cecilia told The Prettyish. “Think of this as your face going to the gym or getting a workout.” According to Cecilia, using a jade roller to massage the face alleviates puffiness, redness, and inflammation, promotes blood circulation and lymphatic drainage, and can even help manage rosacea or eczema. “The effects are very soothing and calming to the skin, and [jade rollers] are inexpensive and simple to [use] at home.” Cecilia added.
You can use a jade roller at any time of day, but Cecilia recommends a regimen of 2-3 times daily with a serum or you facial oil. “It is important to be sure skin is clean first then apply a serum beforehand. While rolling the stone on the face, be gentle and don’t pull the skin.”
Cecilia has kindly laid out this easy step by step guide for you to follow when using a jade roller. Start at the chin and roll horizontally out to the hairline. The pressure should be light and comfortable on the skin. Move up to the nose and roll from the corner of the nose out towards the ears. Use the small end of the jade roller and place it in the inner corner of the eye. Roll out toward the temples. Place the roller on the eyebrows, and roll downwards, ending at the temples. Roll from the eyebrows upwards to the hairline, moving across the forehead.
Cecilia broke down the art of jade rolling in a few easy steps. Be sure to apply your serum or face oil first.
Step one: Start at the chin and roll horizontally out to the hairline. The pressure should be light and comfortable on the skin.
Step two: Move up to the nose and roll from the corner of the nose out towards the ears.
Step three: Use the small end of the jade roller and place it in the inner corner of the eye. Roll out toward the temples.
Step three: Place the roller on the eyebrows, and roll downwards, ending at the temples.
Step four: Roll from the eyebrows upwards to the hairline, moving across the forehead.
According to Cecilia, you can store your jade roller in your bathroom cabinet, as the jade stone is inherently cool. While Instagram is filled with tons of tips to store your jade roller in the fridge and keep it extra cool, Cecilia says both options will lead to the same result—although the cooled stone feels extra refreshing. She also recommends cleaning your jade roller regularly.
Cecilia recommends cleaning your roller “before and after using the tool, with regular water.” Rinse rather than soak the tool, and then use a soft cotton pad or soft towel to dry.
